As a part of my practice, I work on bridging the gap between Persian calligraphy and new media tools, partly to keep this traditional art alive and relevant. Over the past 10 years, I have created digital calligraphy artworks with several tools ranging from static approaches in Photoshop and Illustrator, to animated and time-based 3D creations in After Effects and Cinema4D.

I had fantasized (and hallucinated) of bringing my letters to the magical realm of real-time. I had no point of reference and had not seen that being done, which mostly meant that having such a crossbreed of skills is rare.

The next natural step was always real-time.
Touchdesigner was the software that ignited my artistic flame!
In 2019, I produced fanaa, which uses visual programming techniques to bring Persian calligraphy to real-time audiovisual performance.

In this session, I would like to share with you some of the techniques I have used over the past years, hoping to contribute to a meaningful dialogue on the present-day and future of our cross-disciplinary fields, one that can offer us the necessary tools to recognize our contemporary identities, to construct and expand on our human narratives.
